Pastor: The Reverend Ned Alderman

Rev. Ned Alderman earned a bachelor’s degree in communications from Virginia Wesleyan College in 1984.  He worked as a technical writer for Tidewater Communications and as associate editor of Port Folio, a weekly lifestyle and entertainment magazine, before receiving a master’s of divinity degree from Perkins School of Theology at Southern Methodist University in 2000.  After graduation, he served the Cheriton Charge on the Eastern Shore District of the Virginia Annual Conference of the United Methodist Church, and was ordained an elder in full connection in 2004.

Rev. Alderman was commissioned as a naval chaplain candidate program officer [CCPO] in August 1998.  He superseded to active duty as a Navy chaplain in 2004, and was assigned to Marine Corps Base Camp Fuji, Japan, that August.  He was chaplain for Carrier Air Wing 14 in Lemoore, Calif., November 2005-November 2007, serving 1,500 servicemembers in seven squadrons from Coronado, Calif., to Whidbey Island, Wash.

In November 2007, Rev. Alderman transferred to the Surface Force Ministry Center in Norfolk.  He volunteered for individual augmentee orders to Camp Bucca, Iraq, in February 2008, and served as chaplain for Navy Provisional Detainee Battalion Five, May 2008-May 2009, including with a nine-month deployment.  He separated from active duty in order to pursue hospital chaplaincy in December 2010.

In 2011, Rev. Alderman completed an internship and began a residency in clinical pastoral education [CPE] at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Hampton, Va.  After graduation in 2012, Rev. Alderman was appointed by the Virginia Annual Conference to pastor Central United Methodist Church in Clifton Forge, Va.  He pastored there until he was appointed to Epworth UMC in Norfolk, Va., in June 2014.

A naval reservist since 2011, Rev. Alderman has served with CNMRA ROC in Norfolk, Va., August 2011-December 2012; 4th MEDLOG in Newport News, Va., in 2013; and CNSLREADINESS HQ in Norfolk, 2014-2016.  He returned to CNRMA ROC in 2017 and has orders there through October 2021.  He was promoted to the rank of commander in January 2018.
